On June 6, 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops, including 61,000 British, 21,000 Canadians, and 73,000 Americans, courageously stormed the beaches of Normandy in Operation Overlord. This massive effort was the largest combined military operation ever, demonstrating unparalleled bravery, determination, and a shared mission to liberate Europe from tyranny.

Had the Allies not taken this bold step or if the operation had failed, the map of Europe and possibly the world would be unrecognizable today. The British Normandy Memorial honours the memory of 22,442 servicemen and women from 30 nations who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. As we reflect on the remarkable courage of countless unsung heroes, such as CSM Stan Hollis, the only Victoria Cross recipient on D-Day, we are reminded of the incredible valour, commitment, and unity of a generation that truly "saved the world."
